Baptism

Baptism

Baptism is the foundational sacrament that unites us with Jesus and the Church.

Jesus himself was baptised in the river Jordan by his cousin, the aptly named John the Baptist, and the Gospel says:

"...And when Jesus was baptised, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Matthew 3:13-17

Reconciliation

Reconciliation, also know as confession, is the sacrament of forgiveness for our sins offered to us through God's grace and mercy.

'Those who are well have no need of a physician but those who are sick; I came not to call the righteous but sinners' Mark 2:17

Refer to the newsletter for confession times.

First Holy Communion

Holy Communion, or the Holy Eucharist, is the bread and wine which is consecrated (blessed) and through transubstantiation (a transformation of substance) becomes the Body and Blood of Christ that we share at the celebration of Holy Mass.

This follows the call from Jesus to his disciples at the Last Supper when He broke bread and shared it saying 'this is my Body', and similarly with the cup saying 'this is my Blood', and said after each to 'do this in memory of me'

Confirmation

Confirmation is usually the third sacrament of initiation into the church after Baptism and First Holy Communion and makes you a full member of the Catholic Church.

In receiving this Sacrament we are following in the footsteps of Jesus's disciples - Jesus told his disciples that they would not be left alone when he ascended to Heaven but he would give them His 'advocate'.

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

(Acts 2:1-4)

Marriage

Marriage is a beautiful sacrament of God's blessing on the love and union of a man and woman for the rest of their lives.

"To love a person means to see him as God intended him."

Fyodor M. Dostoyevsky

There is such a great joy in sharing the celebration of this sacrament with couples in our church and we look forward to supporting you in this way.

Anointing of the sick

Anointing of the Sick involves a special liturgy for those whose health is in a critical state. It has sometimes been referred to as the 'last rites' as it is a sacrament often received by those who are close to death which offers a special blessing in preparation for passing from this life to the next.
